God Bless the Red, White and Badass: A Look into Navy Seal Training

As those who follow my website know, I often like to write about people, places or things that are badass and how it could possibly pertain to fitness.

Well, I find it extremely necessary to point out the obvious act of badassness that has recently occurred—Osama Bin Laden being f*$% ing sniped out and America getting a small, symbolic taste of justice.

How is this at all relevant to fitness?

Chances are…

No wait, the FACT of the matter is that the most badass, elite, physical specimens known as the Seal Team Six (ST6) were the ones chosen to take him and his crew of terrorists down.

Navy Seals, and other military forces alike, are put through an immense amount of physical and mental training to prepare them for the most painstakingly, intense situations that require peak conditioning far beyond what the norm would call “in shape.”

Train like a SEAL

High Intensity

If you think NAVY seals are taking two minute rest between sets to stare at the ESPN updates on the draft—honestly get down in give me fifty.

SEALS are training at such a high capacity of intensity to simulate any situation that they may be ready for in combat or on mission. Just watching them train might just make you vomit. So if you think your P90X workout is the best thing since tube socks on Suzanne Summers, chances are a SEAL would use that as a warm-up…to their warm-up.

Not offense Horton—great program, just trying to make a point.

I highly doubt “when shit goes down” a two minute time out is granted.

Once it starts, it’s all in and all out.

Endurance

Being able to last long period of time during strenuous physical activity is an absolute staple for a SEAL. Running, swimming and hiking long distances become as habit as brushing your teeth–maybe not a good example for you “Dragon Breath”.

So, if you think your nice one mile treadmill run is considered cardio because it makes your ass crack sweat, think again Gino. Endurance is not a pinnacle you EVER reach in your fitness journey—it’s something that just continues to increase a challenge for yourself everyday.

Ran 5 miles today?

Good. Now do 6 tomorrow.

Tactical and Combat Training

Just when you thought running a marathon meant you were ready for anything—think again.

A Navy SEAL could most likely run and marathon, in between a leisurely 2 miles swim and three round boxing match. This elite group can’t rely on just endurance or high intensity workouts.

Live situations such as combat, tactical training and weapon training all play a role in their physical prowess.

'Nough said

Mobility and Recovery

Mobility and recovery are two aspects of fitness that go hand in hand. Navy SEALS have to be in a state of constant rediness. They train hard and long, which is most cases would contribute to over training. This is why low mobility exercises are often conducted in order to enhance recovery and lessen the chances of delayed muscle soreness. I like to call these “active recovery” workouts.

So while you have your steady supply  BCAAs and Protein shakes at the ready—SEALS may go days without a proper amount of nourishment.

Where’s your LEAN BODY shake now?

Make a Difference

Now if you’re reading the above thinking “There is no way in hell I can even think about being that fit,” you’re not alone.

That is why only a very small percentage of people can get to that point.

The point I am trying to make, is that fitness is such an important part of not only your health, but possibly saving a life, protecting yourself in time of crisis or serving justice like the ST6 and other military forces are doing around the world.

Handsome Sonofabitches: Smiley and Pat

I’d like to thank all of those doing so as we speak—I am sure you know a few.

And Cos...who definitely doesn't know how to use this.

God Bless the USA and all the badass folks of the world providing us with the blanket of security we sleep on every night.
